If youโre a fan of Animal Crossing, you know the series is basically as cosy as gaming gets, but what if you were able to see directly through the eyes of your villager instead of controlling them from a simple third-person perspective?
Well, a fan-made VR project is currently bringing the original Animal Crossing to virtual reality, letting you quite literally step inside the GameCube classic.
Animal Crossing VR is still very much a work in progress
While it’s not 100% clear on how this is being made, as weโve just stated, the project is based around the original GameCube version of Animal Crossing. So, we imagine thereโs some tweaking going on to the decomp that has already been completed to make VR a thing.
According to the developer, theyโre aiming for proper head tracking and motion controls, and the world is now โmostly rendering properlyโ, with tools already able to be controlled using VR motion inputs. The plan is to release the project to the masses once things have been polished up a little more.

The shared footage shows the player wandering around the familiar Animal Crossing setting from a much closer perspective than weโre used to, with trees, Nook’s Cranny, and doing a little bit of digging definitely feeling a whole lot different than before.
However, instead of the standard bright blue skies that help give Animal Crossing its relaxing atmosphere, the current VR build surrounds the village with what is essentially a giant black void.
The developer has already said theyโre going to look into implementing a proper skybox, so thankfully I donโt think Tom Nook has transported us into the shadow realm.
As youโd expect at this stage, itโs clearly still experimental, but Animal Crossing does feel like one of those games that could work ridiculously well in VR once everything comes together.
Letโs hope this one continues to progress and weโll be able to play through the whole game like never before.
