GTA 6 might be the Grand Theft Auto game everyone wants and needs right now, but if you prefer that top-down view of old, thereโs something else that could pique your interest.
The original Grand Theft Auto is reportedly being ported to the Nintendo 64, finally giving us a glimpse at something that, interestingly enough, was actually originally meant to happen almost three decades ago.
GTA may finally make its way to N64
Originally shared by ReCollect64, there appears to be a work-in-progress version of the 1997 Grand Theft Auto being created for Nintendoโs 64-bit hardware, complete with that aforementioned classic top-down perspective that started the whole franchise.
[It's extremely early days, but I can definitely see the potential!]

GTA N64 Port WIP
Ported by ElectronicaVictor ~ Sep 14, 2026https://t.co/JQubj8CJ4c#N64 #ReCollect64 pic.twitter.com/Y8aqyDlBNN
This is a new fan-made port from Brazilian developer ElectronicaVictor instead of a long-lost build like what we saw recently with Rareโs Project Dream, so itโs going to take a little bit of time to get working.
Whatโs super interesting about this whole thing is that DMA Design, the studio that would eventually become Rockstar North, actually planned a Nintendo 64 version of Grand Theft Auto during the โ90s.
Thereโsa suggestion that it would have been based on the PlayStation release but with improved graphics and other enhancements. However, the project ultimately disappeared before seeing the light of day.
The original GTA might look a little too blocky for some of you out there compared to what the series has become, but if youโve not played the game before, it is still great today. Iโm a big fan of Chinatown Wars on the DS, and if you dabbled in that at all, there are a lot of parallels.
Thereโs no indication yet of when this N64 port will be considered finished, so donโt go clearing a space on your EverDrive just yet.
Still, after waiting nearly 30 years, GTA 64 finally becoming a reality in some form feels like a bit of a full-circle moment for the franchise.
