Fable 2 has been basically trapped in the Xbox ecosystem for almost two decades, but thatโs finally starting to change thanks to yet another impressive recompilation project.
An unofficial native PC port of Fable 2 is now playable on Windows, allowing Lionheadโs 2008 RPG to run without having to use Xbox Cloud Gaming or going down the Xenia emulation route.
Fable 2 finally gets its PC port
The project in question uses the ReXGlue SDK to statically recompile the Xbox 360 versionโs PowerPC code into C++ at build time, essentially translating the game into something modern PCs can execute natively.
While thatโs a lot of technical mumbo jumbo, if that sounds somewhat familiar, itโs because weโve covered a plethora of similar projects recently.
Super Smash Bros. Melee and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories have both reached 100% decompilation, opening them up to similar recompilation efforts, potentially allowing both to receive umpteen mods, etc.
Fable 2 Recomp supports the Game of the Year Xbox 360 release, and its developer says enough functions have now been mapped to complete the game, although the project itself isnโt considered fully finished just yet.
Interestingly, the initial work was also assisted by the locally-run Qwen3.8 27B LLM, which reportedly managed to get the game running within around an hour before plenty of human trial and error took things further.
The original 30 FPS cap can be replaced with a 60 FPS mode, or uncapped frame rate if you wish, while keyboard and mouse controls have been implemented alongside traditional controller support. Mouse movement handles the camera, and keyboard inputs can be remapped to the original Xbox controls.
You will need to supply the data from your own Fable 2 GOTY USA/Europe disc, with roughly 6.5GB of game content required alongside the recompiled executable, so keep that in mind.
It might still have some rough edges, but after 18 years without an official native PC release, being able to wander around Albion this way is pretty special, and could be just the ticket before the reimagining of the series launches in February next year.
